The ceiling must be at least 42\" above the top of the fireplace opening and a side wall 16\" from the fireplace; the wall directly above the opening must be non-combustible (slate, marble or tile at least 1\/2\" thick) for at least 8\" — 12\" or more and you are done, and on the 24\" and 30\" sizes the GA6050 fireplace hood is what makes a facing of only 8\" to 12\" work (the 18\" needs no hood at all). Under 8\" the facing has to be extended to at least 8\"; if it cannot be, this is not the right fireplace for it.
