About This Product

The Tempest Lantern 20K from Travis Industries

The Tempest Lantern 20K by Travis Industries puts the Tempest's spiraling 20,000 BTU/hr flame inside a 22-1/2" stainless lantern — outdoor only, plumbed to a fixed gas line, from $1,526. Piezo models light by push-button with no electricity and are built for one fuel; the 24V electronic model switches from a wall switch, ships configured for natural gas, and converts to propane with the included #55 orifice.

Choose it over the open Torch if you want the flame framed — the lantern body reads as a fixture on walls, entry posts, and pillars — with exactly the same burner, fuels, and mounting logic underneath.

It is not a plug-and-play patio light: outdoor only, fixed gas line only, no propane cylinders. Within 2 ft of a public walkway the lantern top must sit at least 7 ft above grade, and the electronic model needs the 24V transformer and low-voltage wiring run before it lights.

Specifications

Input is 20,000 BTU/hr on either fuel — 25 burner ports with a #50 orifice at 7" wc on natural gas, 49 ports with a #55 at 11" wc on propane. The electronic model draws 24 VAC, 1.6 A / 40 W on startup through the separately sold 24V transformer. The body measures 22-1/2" by 9-1/2".

Tempest Lantern 20K vs. Tempest Torch

Same 20,000 BTU/hr burner, same piezo-or-electronic choice, same fuel behavior, same posts and pillars. The Torch runs the flame open and starts at from $1,150; the Lantern frames it in glass and starts at from $1,526. Pick by the look — the spec sheet won't separate them.

Features

  • The same patented venturi spiral flame as the Tempest Torch, enclosed in a 22-1/2" lantern body with tempered glass
  • 20,000 BTU/hr on either fuel — 25 ports on natural gas, 49 on propane, so the flame is tuned per fuel rather than throttled
  • The electronic model (94900784) ships configured for natural gas with the #55 LP orifice included for a qualified conversion
  • Wall, post, and pillar mounting share hardware with the Torch — except the wall mount, which is the Lantern-specific 94800831
  • Stainless construction with an automatic gas shutoff valve, listed to ANSI Z21.97 / CSA 2.41 for outdoor decorative use

Answers to common questions

Is the fuel switchable?

On the electronic model, yes: 94900784 ships configured for natural gas and includes the #55 LP orifice for conversion by a qualified service agency. Piezo lanterns are dedicated units — 94900746 natural gas, 94900756 propane — and cannot be converted.

What does the electronic model need to run?

A separately sold 24V transformer — 94800833 for one appliance or 94800830 for up to six — plus low-voltage wire to the lantern. It draws 1.6 A / 40 W on startup.

Which wall mount fits the Lantern?

The Lantern-specific wall mount, sku 94800831 (sheet 17602174) — not the Torch's 94800825. Posts and the pillar mount are shared across Torch and Lantern.

Can it run off a portable propane tank?

No — fixed gas line installations only, outdoors only, per the manual.

Any placement rules?

Within 2 ft of a public walkway, keep the top of the lantern at least 7 ft above grade; lower only where your local authority accepts it.

What’s included, what’s required, and what’s optional?
  • Included in the box: Lantern head with tempered glass and automatic gas shut off; 20,000 BTUs.
  • Required to complete the installation, purchased separately: Mount - wall, deck, in-ground, or pillar mount; the lantern cannot stand on its own; 24V Transformer (only needed for electronic ignition); Gas Line - a fixed natural gas or propane line run by a qualified installer per the manual's requirements — never a portable propane cylinder.
  • Optional: The square black post cover for deck installs, and Tempest service parts — the lantern runs complete without them; the electronic model ships with the #55 LP conversion orifice in the box.

Warranty

In the unlikely event your product experiences a defect, our technical team will guide you through the manufacturer’s warranty process. Here is a general outline of what to expect.

Due to the technical nature of our products, the manufacturer must perform troubleshooting to process a warranty claim. Your installer will need to troubleshoot the problem on-site while working in tandem with our technical team. If troubleshooting leads to what The Torch Guys deems as a defective part, we will submit a warranty claim to the manufacturer on your behalf. Before we submit the claim, we will ask you to review the terms and confirm your consent to proceed.

Once the claim is submitted, the manufacturer will review it and either approve or deny it. If they have all the information and accept the claim, your warranty replacement part(s) will begin processing for shipment. If, for any reason, the claim is denied or we need more information, we will notify you as soon as possible.

All warranties are processed as exchanges. You can expect to receive a prepaid return label for the defective part(s), which must be returned within 30 days of receiving the warranty replacement(s).

Warranty claims can take anywhere from 1-4 weeks to process, depending on the season. Given the length of time claims can take, we recommend you fire up your unit in late summer/early fall to ensure your existing fireplace is in good working order for the winter season.
