The Napoleon Ascent Linear 56" is a linear direct vent gas fireplace with the Topaz CRYSTALINE glass ember bed included: 28,000 BTU/hr on natural gas or 26,500 on propane, a 56-1/2" wide, 39-3/8" high and 18-9/16" deep framed opening, a 5" / 8" top vent and a safety barrier screen, from $4,179. Glass bead, glass ember, rock and log kits change the look, and it carries Napoleon's President's Lifetime Limited Warranty.
Choose the 56" if you want a linear fire you can change over time: the topaz ember bed is standard, and glass beads or glass embers in amber, black, blue, clear, red or topaz, mineral rocks, the Shore Fire kit or a Beach Fire, birch, driftwood or split oak log set go on top. It is approved for bedrooms and bathrooms and certified for mobile homes, so it suits a smaller room as well as a living room.
It is not right for you if you want a traditional log fire. The Ascent Linear is a long linear flame over a topaz ember bed, which you can restyle later with glass, rocks or a log set.
The framed opening is 56-1/2" wide, 39-3/8" high and 18-9/16" deep, and the fireplace itself is 56" wide, 38-13/16" high and 18-5/16" deep with a 49" by 14-3/4" viewing area. The face around the opening is finished in non-combustible material such as brick, stone or tile — the cement board for it ships with the fireplace — and that facing may stand out up to 4" from the door. No hearth is required in front of the fireplace. Mantel clearances depend on the mantel's depth and are charted on page 51 of the installation manual, with a reduced chart for installations with the Universal Heat Management system; clearances from the vent and the fireplace to combustible framing are shown on page 47. It takes a 1/2" gas line and a hard-wired 110 V supply.
All Ascent Linear sizes share the topaz ember bed, the safety barrier and pilot-on-demand ignition, while the media and log kits are made for each size and not every kit is offered for every size; the 36", 42" and 46" vent on 4" / 7" pipe and the 56" on 5" / 8". In output and price, the 36" runs 17,500 BTU/hr on natural gas, from $3,149; the 42" runs 20,000 BTU/hr on natural gas; the 46" runs 24,000 BTU/hr on natural gas, from $3,839; the 56" runs 28,000 BTU/hr on natural gas, from $4,179.
It is a direct vent fireplace on a 5" exhaust / 8" air-intake pipe off the top, run out through a wall or up through the roof: up to 20 ft horizontally and up to 40 ft vertically. Use one brand of pipe throughout — Napoleon (Wolf Steel), Metal-Fab, BDM, Simpson Dura-Vent, Selkirk Direct Temp, Olympia Ventis or ICC — and do not mix rigid and flexible pipe. Napoleon's terminations include the GD422-1, GD422R-2 or ST58U-1 wall terminal, GD410, GD411 and GD412 roof kits and the GD401 periscope. The 5" / 8" collar can also be reduced to 4" / 7" pipe with the A4758AK reducer. It can vent up an existing masonry chimney through a co-linear liner, and it is certified for a power vent kit. The vent run and termination are ordered separately and sized to your installation (see pg 15 in the installation manual), and the outside terminal clearances are listed on page 19.
The Topaz CRYSTALINE glass ember bed ships with the fireplace and it runs on that alone. Any kit you add sits on the media tray with it: glass beads or glass embers in another color, mineral rocks, the Shore Fire kit or a Beach Fire, birch, driftwood or split oak log set. Glass over the burner is kept to a single layer. To cover the 56", Napoleon recommends 2 glass kits; each choice above is one kit, so add more if you want full coverage.
Yes, with planning. Napoleon draws the minimum TV clearances above the Ascent Linear on page 52 of the installation manual for a flush installation with a mantel, a recessed installation and partially recessed installations with a mantel, and crosses out a flush installation without a mantel; the partially recessed layouts are only acceptable with the optional Universal Heat Management kit installed. That kit lowers the temperature above the fireplace and reduces the mantel clearances (page 51), and it goes in while the fireplace is installed, before the gas line. Always stay within your TV maker's own temperature limits.
Indoors, including bedrooms, bathrooms and bed-sitting rooms, and it is certified for mobile and manufactured homes where local codes allow (fastened in place). It is rated to 4,500 ft, with the input reduced above that. Keep furniture and other objects at least 48" from the front, and do not run it below freezing.
A 1/2" natural gas or propane line to the fireplace's flex connector and shut-off valve, installed and tested before the wall is finished — natural gas at 4.5" to 7" w.c. inlet pressure, propane at 11" to 13" w.c. Electrically it is hard-wired to a grounded 110 V supply; in a power outage it can run from a USB power bank (not included) in place of its USB power supply. It ships for natural gas, and choosing Propane above adds Napoleon's conversion kit.
No. The Torch Guys is an authorized Napoleon dealer, so the President's Lifetime Limited Warranty applies in full, and we file claims with Napoleon for you. The combustion chamber, burner, glass (against heat breakage) and the logs, embers and rocks are covered for as long as you own the fireplace — parts free for the first 10 years, then at half of retail; blowers, valves, remotes and other electrical parts and the labour are covered for the first year. Coverage starts on the installation date.
