A 40" traditional direct-vent gas fireplace with a 34-1/4" by 24-1/2" view of the fire. The Superior DRT3040 is sealed combustion — it takes its air from outside and vents straight back out, top or rear, so it can go on an outside wall without a chimney. Natural gas runs 24,000 BTU/hr at 64.8% P4 efficiency. Choose millivolt ignition, which lights with a piezo igniter and needs no power, or electronic ignition with battery backup. from $2,409.
Choose the DRT3040 if you have the wall for a 40-7/8" opening and want more glass than the 35" gives you without stepping up to the widest in the series — it is the middle size, and the one that suits most main living rooms.
It is not right if you cannot frame an opening 40-7/8" wide. The firebox is a fixed size, so a narrower wall means the 35" model rather than this one. It is also not right where there is no route to an outside wall or roof — this is a sealed direct-vent firebox and it has to vent, so an interior room with no venting path needs a vent-free or an electric model instead.
Frame an opening 40-7/8" wide and 18-1/2" deep, allowing 43-3/4" of height for a top-vent run or 28-1/4" for a rear-vent one. Keep a combustible mantel 3-1/2" clear and side walls 6" clear. It vents on 4.5"/7.5" Secure Vent rigid or Secure Flex components; the SV4.5HT-2 horizontal termination fits every model in the series. Listed by PFS to ANSI Z21.88, report F13-094.
The three DRT3000 sizes share the same firebox design, ignition choices and facade range; they differ in width and output. This 40" runs 24,000 BTU/hr on natural gas at from $2,409, against the 35" at from $2,159 and the 45" at from $2,879. Frame to the size you pick — the framing width differs by five inches per step.
Yes — both the millivolt and the electronic ignition models can run in a power outage. The millivolt model is a standing pilot system with a piezo igniter and needs no electricity at all. The electronic model does use external power, but four AA batteries back it up and keep the fireplace operating through an outage. The blower is the exception: on either model it needs mains power and will not run without it.
Top or rear, on Superior's 4.5"/7.5" Secure Vent rigid pipe or Secure Flex. Allow 43-3/4" of framing height for a top-vent run and 28-1/4" for a rear-vent one. The SV4.5HT-2 horizontal termination fits every model in the DRT3000 series. The small square SV4.5HTSS is listed for the 40" as well. Send us your wall build-up and we will size the run with you.
A combustible mantel must stay at least 3-1/2" clear, and the allowance grows with mantel depth — the manual charts it from 6" to 16" of depth. Combustible side walls need 6". Give us your mantel depth and we will read the chart with you.
Superior warrants the fireplace, and The Torch Guys handles it for you — we register the appliance and, if you ever need to claim, we deal with the manufacturer on your behalf rather than handing you a phone number. Keep your invoice and the model number; we hold the rest on file.
