A 72-inch mantel shelf, 8" deep and 5" tall, that mounts on a ledger board screwed into your wall studs. The Fireside Finishings Ozark has a substantial 5-inch face with visible wood character. Primed mdf arrives sealed and ready for your paint colour; unfinished maple arrives raw for you or your finisher to stain or seal on site; unfinished distressed knotty alder arrives raw, with the distressed texture already worked into the wood. Four factory stains are available on the maple. from $859.
Choose the Ozark if you want visible wood character above the firebox rather than a painted architectural line — Baxter, Crosby and Fillmore are all lighter-profile shelves.
It is not right if your fireplace needs a full flush mantel with legs framing the opening — this is a shelf only. It also does not set your clearances: how far the shelf must sit above the opening is dictated by your fireplace manufacturer's instructions, and on some units that distance rules a shelf out entirely.
The shelf measures 72" wide, 8" deep and 5" tall. It hangs on a ledger board fastened into pre-marked stud locations, then pins to that ledger through pre-drilled holes, and is caulked to the wall in a matching colour.
All the Ozark shelves share the same depth, height and finish range; only the length changes. This one is from $859, against from $759 and from $809. Pick the length off your fireplace opening and the wall around it, not off the firebox alone.
That is set by your fireplace, not by the shelf. The instructions cover the shelf only and tell you to follow the fireplace manufacturer's installation instructions so the required clearances are met. Check the clearance to combustibles for your firebox before you pick a mounting height — send us the model number and we will look it up with you.
A ledger board goes up first, screwed into pre-marked stud locations. The shelf then drops over that ledger and pins to it with nails through pre-drilled holes. The manufacturer does not publish a weight rating for the shelf, so we will not quote one — if you are planning to load it up, ask us first.
Yes — Ebony, Provincial, New Gray and Whitewash are applied at the factory before it ships, to the unfinished maple shelf. The distressed knotty alder ships unfinished for you or your finisher to seal; ask us before you order if you want alder in a specific colour and we will check with the manufacturer. Stained shelves are non-stock, so allow extra lead time.
No. The Torch Guys is an authorized Fireside Finishings dealer, and we handle warranty registration and any claim on your behalf — you do not chase the manufacturer yourself.
