Monessen Artisan 60" IFT 2.0 Vent-Free Linear Gas Fireplace
Sixty inches of flame and no chimney to build. The Monessen Artisan 60 is a vent-free linear gas fireplace: 40,000 BTU/hr on natural gas or 39,000 on propane, a 60" x 17" viewing area of Diamond fireglass over reflective black glass panels, multicolour LED hearth lighting and the IntelliFire Touch 2.0 touchscreen remote — all standard, at 99.9% efficiency. It frames into a 64-5/8" x 39-3/4" x 13-1/8" rough opening, from $5,399, with a 20-year firebox warranty.
Choose the Artisan 60 if you want a wide linear fire in a room with no route for a vent — an interior wall, a condo, a basement, a manufactured home where codes allow — and you want the finished look out of one carton: media, black glass panels, lighting and remote are already in it. It finishes flush with drywall to the perimeter, or with non-combustible material right up to the opening for a frameless look.
It is not right if you need primary heat — Monessen rates it as supplemental or decorative heat only — or if the room is a bedroom or bathroom, where an unvented heater may not be installed. It also needs room to breathe: a space of at least 2,000 cubic feet counting rooms open to it, or combustion air brought in per the National Fuel Gas Code, and a very tightly built house may need extra mechanical ventilation. If the wall can reach the outdoors and you would rather not manage room air at all, a direct-vent fireplace is the better tool.
Specifications
Frame a rough opening 64-5/8" wide by 39-3/4" high by 13-1/8" deep (13-3/4" deep when finishing with Install Option 2), or a corner opening set 63-7/8" back along each wall with a 90-3/8" diagonal wall. Keep 6" from the inside of the appliance to a combustible side wall and 36" from the opening to the ceiling; it may sit against a combustible back wall and directly on a wood, plywood or particle-board floor — never on carpet, vinyl or tile, and with vinyl flooring keep 14" of non-vinyl floor protection in front. Mantel and projection clearances depend on their depth — see Figure 3.8 on page 16 (combustible) and Figure 3.10 on page 17 (non-combustible) of the installation manual. Above 2,000 ft the input drops 4% per 1,000 ft.
How the Artisan 60 compares to the other Artisan sizes
The Artisan sizes share the firebox depth, the IntelliFire Touch 2.0 ignition and the same finish kits in their own widths; what changes is the flame bed and what is in the carton. The 60" runs 40,000 BTU/hr at from $5,399. The 48" runs 39,000 BTU/hr across a 48" x 17" opening at from $4,219, and the 48" see-through opens the same view to two rooms at from $4,569. The 72" matches this 60" on output (40,000 BTU/hr) and standard equipment and adds a foot of width (76-5/8" rough opening). The 42" is the one to read carefully: it ships without the remote, LED lighting and black glass panels that the 48", 60" and 72" include, at from $2,829.

Answers to common questions
Does it need a chimney, a vent, or an outside wall?
No — on either fuel, the Artisan 60 is a vent-free heater that takes its combustion air from the room and sends nothing outdoors, so it can go on an interior wall, against a combustible back wall, or recessed into a chase. What it does need is air: a room of at least 2,000 cubic feet (rooms open to it without doors count), or combustion air brought in by one of the National Fuel Gas Code methods, and it can never be installed in a bedroom or bathroom.
Will it work if the power goes out?
Yes — both the natural gas and propane models light in an outage. The IntelliFire Touch 2.0 ignition carries a factory-installed battery pack (four AA batteries, not included) and switches to it seamlessly, so the remote or wall switch still starts the fire. The LED lighting and any other 120 V function drop out on battery, batteries are for emergencies rather than everyday use, and Monessen advises leaving the flame-height and thermostat options alone to preserve them.

Can I add logs or stones to the fireglass?
Yes — one or the other, never both, and only the kits Monessen approves for this heater. The CDLS driftwood log set mounts on pin brackets fitted to the burner and uses only the logs supplied in the kit; the STONEKIT scatters eighteen ceramic-fibre stones on the media in front of and behind the burner, never on it or in the flame. Either sits on top of the standard Diamond fireglass or on the Bronze, Onyx or Sapphire upgrade, and any unapproved media or accessory voids the warranty.
How close can a mantel, shelf, or television be?
It depends on how far the projection sticks out, and Monessen charts it rather than giving one number: combustible mantel and wall-projection clearances are in Figure 3.8 on page 16 of the installation manual, non-combustible ones in Figure 3.10 on page 17, and reducing them further takes non-combustible construction to 12 inches above the framing height. For a TV, Monessen publishes good-faith wall-surface guidelines in Figure 3.12 on page 18 — recommended clearances only, not a guarantee — and asks that the TV's actual temperature be validated against its maker's limit at installation. Does it need electricity?
Yes, for normal operation on either fuel: the junction box must be wired to an unswitched 120 VAC circuit (a switched circuit defeats the ODS safety lockout), and near a sink the circuit needs GFCI protection. The control itself runs on 6 volts through a transformer plugged into that junction box, with the AA battery pack as the outage backup. Low-voltage and 120 V wiring cannot share a wall box.
How do I finish the wall around it, and do I need a front?
Two ways, and no front is required. With Install Option 1, drywall finishes flush to the left, right and bottom edges of the appliance, with the supplied 7-1/4" non-combustible board above the opening (it may never be removed or covered with drywall). With Install Option 2 the appliance is recessed and non-combustible material such as tile or stone runs right up to the opening without overlapping it, so the screen can still lift off — that is the method for the satin black inside-fit trim kit and the contemporary satin black or veined copper faces, which take 1/4" to 1" of finishing material. Surrounding surfaces must tolerate 190°F, and 100% acrylic latex paint is recommended.
How does the warranty work if something goes wrong?
Hearth & Home Technologies warrants the Artisan 60 for whichever fuel you order — 20 years on the firebox, 10 years on the burner and refractory components, 2 years on the electrical components and remote, 1 year on all other parts — and its warranty applies only to appliances bought from an authorized HHT dealer, so keep your invoice.
