Monessen Artisan 72" Vent Free Linear Gas Fireplace
A 72-inch linear gas fireplace with no chimney and no vent run: the Monessen Artisan AVFL72 is a UL-listed unvented room heater that sits against a combustible back wall and frames into a 76-5/8" x 39-3/4" x 13-1/8" opening. It puts out up to 40,000 BTU/hr on natural gas (39,000 on propane) on a variable flame through a 72" x 17" opening, with reflective black glass panels, multicolor LED hearth lighting, six bags of Diamond fireglass and the IFT2-RC450 touchscreen remote all in the carton. from $6,749.
Choose the 72" Artisan if you want the widest vent-free linear fireplace in the line and a wall with no chimney chase to build — a gas line and a 110-120 VAC circuit are the only services it needs. Everything that makes the display (glass panels, LED lighting, fireglass, remote) ships standard; the faces, trim kit, log set and stone kit are finishing choices, not requirements.
It is not right for a bedroom or bathroom, for a small or tightly sealed room, or as the primary heat source — it is an unvented heater that burns room air, and those locations are barred outright. It is rated as supplemental heat only. It is also not the fireplace for a wall that cannot take a 76-5/8" x 39-3/4" rough opening. If you need a vented appliance for those rooms, look at a direct vent linear fireplace instead.
Specifications
Frame a rough opening 76-5/8" wide by 39-3/4" high and 13-1/8" deep (13-3/4" if you finish with Install Option 2); the corner layout needs 72-3/8" along each wall. The appliance may sit directly on a hard combustible floor or a supported platform, against a combustible back wall, with 6" to any combustible side wall and 36" of ceiling above the opening. The supplied 7-1/4" non-combustible board runs across the full width above the unit and is never covered with drywall; combustible mantel clearance depends on how far the mantel projects — see Figure 3.8 on page 16 of the installation manual. Gas enters from the left side or the bottom (no right-side access) at a 1/2" NPT connection; natural gas runs on 3.5" w.c. manifold pressure, propane on 10" w.c. Input ratings hold to 2,000 ft, dropping 4% per 1,000 ft above that.
How the AVFL72 compares to the other Artisan sizes
The 60" and 72" Artisan share the same 40,000 BTU/hr natural-gas rating (39,000 on propane), the same remote, LED lighting and black glass panels, and the same 39-3/4" framing height and 13-1/8" depth; the 72" is a foot wider (76-5/8" versus 64-5/8" rough opening) and takes six bags of fireglass instead of five. Against the 48" (39,000 BTU/hr, 52-5/8" wide) the step up is two feet of opening, and the 48" see-through puts that same 48" x 17" view into two rooms. The 42" is the value entry, in a 24,500 or 34,000 BTU/hr tier, and sells the remote, lighting and black glass as kits. The 60" starts at from $5,149, the 48" at from $4,019, the see-through at from $4,359, the 42" at from $2,829; this 72" starts at from $6,749.

Does the AVFL72 need a chimney, a vent, or electricity?
No chimney and no vent on either model — the Artisan 72 is an unvented room heater listed to ANSI Z21.11.2, so it needs only a gas line and an unswitched 110-120 VAC circuit to its junction box. The IntelliFire Touch 2.0 control runs on a 6-volt adaptor from that circuit, and a four-AA battery pack (batteries not included) keeps the flame available in a power outage; the LED lights need household power. Gas enters at the left side or the bottom of the unit at a 1/2" NPT connection.

Optional: A contemporary face or the inside-fit trim kit, the driftwood log set, the tumbled-stone kit, Bronze/Onyx/Sapphire fireglass and the Wi-Fi module or wireless wall switch — the fireplace runs fully without any of them.
Can I switch it from natural gas to propane later?
No — neither model converts. The AVFL72NIF is built for natural gas and the AVFL72PIF for propane, field conversion is not permitted, and the appliance must not be installed at all if the supply gas differs from the rating plate. Order the fuel you have; propane installs also need an external regulator holding the supply to 13" w.c. or less.
Where can it go — and where can't it?
Any room except a bedroom or bathroom, for either fuel — those two are barred, along with high-traffic, windy or drafty spots and anywhere curtains or furniture would sit within 36" of the front. Because it burns room air, the space has to supply combustion air under the National Fuel Gas Code (50 cubic feet of room volume per 1,000 BTU/hr for an unconfined space), and it is listed as supplemental heat, never the primary heat source. It can sit directly on a hard combustible floor — but not on carpet, vinyl or tile — and is approved for manufactured homes where codes allow. How close can a mantel or a TV be?
Combustible mantel clearance depends on how far the mantel projects, for every model on this page — see Figure 3.8 on page 16 of the installation manual (Figure 3.10 on page 17 for a non-combustible mantel), with a 36" minimum from the opening to the ceiling and 6" to a combustible side wall. For televisions Monessen publishes good-faith wall-surface guidelines only — see Figure 3.12 on page 18 of the installation manual — and defers to the TV maker's maximum operating temperature, checked at installation. How is the wall finished around it?
Two ways, on either fuel: Option 1 runs drywall flush to the left, right and bottom edges with the supplied 7-1/4" non-combustible board across the top; Option 2 recesses the unit and finishes non-combustible material (tile, stone, cement board) right to the opening — the method Monessen recommends for its finish kits. The optional AVFL72TKI satin black inside-fit trim kit and the AVFL72CFVC veined copper or AVFL72CFSB satin black contemporary faces each accept 1/4" to 1" of finishing material. Finish surfaces must withstand 190°F and the non-combustible board is never covered with drywall.
What does the remote do, and what other controls are there?
The included IFT2-RC450 touchscreen remote runs everything on both models: flame on/off, flame height, the LED color and intensity, cold-climate mode, a programmable timer and a thermostat mode from its built-in temperature sensor, from up to 30 feet away. The IntelliFire Wi-Fi module (IFT-WFM) adds app control, the IFT-RC150U wireless wall switch adds on/off at the wall, and a wired wall switch can be added too. The control shuts the flame off by itself after 9 hours without a command.
How does the warranty work if something goes wrong?
Hearth & Home Technologies warrants the Artisan, and The Torch Guys handles the claim for you — we register the appliance and deal with the manufacturer on your behalf. The firebox and heat exchanger carry 20 years on parts and 3 years on labor, the burner, logs and refractory components 10 years parts and 1 year labor, electrical components (modules, remote, valve, pilot, lights) and the glass panels 2 years, and everything else 1 year; coverage transfers to a later owner. Keep your invoice and model number and have the unit serviced annually by a qualified technician — we hold the rest on file.
