About This Product

Superior BRT40ST 40" See-Through B-Vent Gas Fireplace

A see-through B-vent gas fireplace that puts one fire in two rooms, rated 37,500 BTU/hr high on natural gas with Hi/Lo flame adjustment at the valve. The Superior BRT40ST is millivolt: the piezo igniter lights the pilot without matches, batteries or household electricity, and it keeps running in a power outage. Tempered glass enclosure panels, the mesh safety-barrier screens, the deluxe split oak log set, embers and volcanic stone are all in the box. from $5,169.

Choose the BRT40ST if you want a room-divider fireplace two spaces share and you have a straight vertical path to the roof — it frames into a 22-3/4"-deep partition chase built from 2 x 4 studs (or heavier) at 41-1/2" square, and it is approved for bedrooms in the USA where the room is an unconfined space and codes allow.

It is not right if you cannot run a vertical flue — this appliance cannot be vented horizontally and needs at least 10 ft of vertical system height — or if you are buying it to heat the rooms, because it is a decorative appliance, not a heater. For a see-through fireplace that heats and vents out a side wall, look at Superior's direct-vent see-through models (the DRT63ST series) instead.

Specifications

Frame a 41-1/2" wide by 41-1/2" high opening (either may be reduced to 41"), 22-3/4" deep with 5/8" drywall, in minimum 2 x 4 studs. Clearance to combustibles is 1/2" at the back and sides (0" from the spacers), 0" at the floor, and 64" from the bottom of the unit to the ceiling; mantel clearance is charted against mantel depth. When the fireplace divides a room, the side walls must not extend beyond either viewing side. Listed by PFS to ANSI Z21.50, report F14-172, for elevations to 4,500 ft.

How the BRT40ST compares to Superior's other see-through

Superior's other see-through is the sealed direct-vent DRT63ST at from $10,649. The BRT40ST is the radiant B-vent version of the idea: a decorative fire rather than a heater, a vertical-only 6" Type B flue, and millivolt ignition that runs without household power — from $5,169.

Features

  • A see-through B-vent firebox — one fire shared by two rooms, with tempered glass enclosure panels and mesh safety-barrier screens on both sides
  • Millivolt ignition lights with a piezo igniter — no matches, batteries or household electricity — and keeps running in a power outage
  • 37,500 BTU/hr high on natural gas, with Hi/Lo flame adjustment at the valve
  • Deluxe split oak log set, glowing embers and volcanic stone over a painted black interior
  • Vents vertically on listed 6" Type B double-wall pipe — 10 ft minimum system height
  • Approved for bedrooms in the USA where the room is an unconfined space and local codes allow

Answers to common questions

Will it work if the power goes out?

Yes — the ignition is millivolt, so the fireplace does not use household electricity at all. The piezo igniter lights the pilot without matches or batteries, and the manual states the system provides continued service in the event of a power outage. Only optional accessories that need power (a plug-in remote receiver, for example) are affected by an outage.

How do I vent it?

Vertically only, on listed 6" Type B double-wall pipe into a listed vent cap above the roof — this appliance cannot be vented horizontally. The system needs at least 10 ft of overall vertical height with no offset, or 12 ft when an offset up to 60 degrees is used, and must not exceed 40 ft. Send us your roof height and we will talk the run through with you.

What’s included, what’s required, and what’s optional?
  • Included in the box: 37,500 BTU/hr high on natural gas (34,000 after propane conversion); Millivolt Ignition System (standing pilot — runs without household electricity); Tempered glass enclosure panels on both sides; Deluxe split oak log set; Glowing embers, volcanic stone and vermiculite media; Front face assemblies and hoods for both sides; Mesh safety-barrier screens (fitted before operation); Factory-fitted flexible gas connector with 1/2" shutoff valve; ANSI Z21.50 listed (PFS); 20-year limited warranty (body, firebox and barrier).
  • Required to complete the installation, purchased separately: Venting - listed 6" Type B double-wall vent pipe and a listed vertical termination; 10 ft minimum system height, and this appliance cannot be vented horizontally; Gas line - run by a qualified installer to the rating-plate pressures.
  • Optional: An outside air kit (FOAK-4 or FOAK-4LD), a wall switch, timer or remote control, and the Buff Rustic brickaded liner kit — the fireplace operates fully without them.
Where can it go — bedrooms, room dividers, mobile homes?

It can go in most interior walls and as a mid-room divider, in bedrooms in the USA when the room is an unconfined space and local codes allow, but never in manufactured housing built to HUD standards. As a divider, the side walls must not extend beyond either viewing side, and with one side flush to a wall the opposite wall must stop at the viewing sides too.

Can I run it on propane?

Yes — by choosing the propane option on this page, which adds Superior's certified millivolt conversion kit (GCKEBVMNP) to the order. The fireplace itself ships built for natural gas; a qualified service agency installs the kit in the field, and on propane the rating is 34,000 BTU/hr high against 37,500 on natural gas.

How does the warranty work if something goes wrong?

Superior warrants the fireplace, and The Torch Guys handles it for you — we register the appliance and, if you ever need to claim, we deal with the manufacturer on your behalf rather than handing you a phone number. Keep your invoice and the model number; we hold the rest on file.

Warranty

In the unlikely event your product experiences a defect, our technical team will guide you through the manufacturer’s warranty process. Here is a general outline of what to expect.

Due to the technical nature of our products, the manufacturer must perform troubleshooting to process a warranty claim. Your installer will need to troubleshoot the problem on-site while working in tandem with our technical team. If troubleshooting leads to what The Torch Guys deems as a defective part, we will submit a warranty claim to the manufacturer on your behalf. Before we submit the claim, we will ask you to review the terms and confirm your consent to proceed.

Once the claim is submitted, the manufacturer will review it and either approve or deny it. If they have all the information and accept the claim, your warranty replacement part(s) will begin processing for shipment. If, for any reason, the claim is denied or we need more information, we will notify you as soon as possible.

All warranties are processed as exchanges. You can expect to receive a prepaid return label for the defective part(s), which must be returned within 30 days of receiving the warranty replacement(s).

Warranty claims can take anywhere from 1-4 weeks to process, depending on the season. Given the length of time claims can take, we recommend you fire up your unit in late summer/early fall to ensure your existing fireplace is in good working order for the winter season.
