An open-front 42" radiant gas fireplace rated 45,000 BTU/hr maximum input, with a six-piece ceramic log set on a glowing ember bed and White Herringbone refractory panels. The Superior BRT4542 vents on locally sourced 6" Type B pipe, vertically through the roof — the venting a masonry-style open fireplace uses, not a sealed direct-vent run. Choose millivolt ignition, which lights with a piezo igniter and runs without household electricity, or electronic ignition on 120 V. from $3,089.
Choose the BRT4542 if you want the open-front look and sound of a real radiant fireplace in a 42" chase and you have a straight vertical path to the roof for the 6" B-vent — it frames to 0" clearance at the back and sides, so the chase stays tight.
It is not right if you cannot run a vertical flue through the roof, or if you are buying it to heat the room. This is a B-vent decorative appliance — it must terminate vertically and is not for use as a heating appliance. For an outside wall with no roof path, or for real heat, look at Superior's direct-vent DRT3000 and DRT3500 fireplaces instead — they seal the firebox and vent straight out the back.
Frame a rough opening 44-3/8" wide by 48-1/4" high by 23-1/8" deep. Clearance to combustibles is 0" at the back and sides of the outer surround, 1" to B-vent surfaces, and 42" from the opening to the ceiling; combustible mantel clearance depends on how deep the mantel shelf is — see Figure 5 on page 7 of the installation manual. Set it on a metal or wood panel rather than directly on carpet or vinyl, and give it an unconfined space of at least 3,100 cubic feet. Listed by PFS to ANSI Z21.50, report F09-143.
The BRT4342 at from $2,989 is the same 42" firebox with White Stacked refractory panels instead of White Herringbone — the pattern is the whole difference. The 36" BRT4536 at from $2,769 gives up four inches of framing width and rates 40,000 BTU/hr against this model's 45,000 at from $3,089.
The Millivolt models will and the Electronic Ignition models will not. Millivolt ignition lights with a piezo igniter and the wall switch runs on millivolt current from the thermopile, so no household electricity is involved at all. Electronic ignition connects to 120 V household wiring, so it cannot light during an outage.
Vertically, on 6" Type B double-wall pipe terminating in a listed vent cap above the roof — the pipe and cap are locally sourced, not in the box. The manual allows offsets within its charted limits and requires a minimum 8 ft of total vertical system height, and the vent damper must be locked fully open to operate. Send us your roof height and offsets and we will talk the run through with you.
No — it ships smooth-faced and open-front, and runs that way. The certified BD42 bi-fold glass door is an optional accessory that can be ordered and installed any time after the fireplace is in; only doors certified for this appliance may be used, operated fully open or fully closed.
The minimum height a combustible mantel shelf can sit above the opening depends on how deep the shelf is — see Figure 5 on page 7 of the installation manual. Keep everything at least 42" below the ceiling line. You can also send us your mantel depth. We're here to help!
Superior warrants the fireplace, and The Torch Guys handles it for you — we register the appliance and, if you ever need to claim, we deal with the manufacturer on your behalf rather than handing you a phone number. Keep your invoice and the model number; we hold the rest on file.
