About This Product

Superior DRT35ST 35" See-Through Direct Vent Gas Fireplace

One fire shared by two rooms. The Superior DRT35ST is a 35" see-through direct-vent gas fireplace: sealed combustion that draws its air from outside and vents top or rear, 30,000 BTU/hr on natural gas at 74.8% AFUE, with electronic ignition and tempered glass on both sides. The log set, glowing embers, the painted black interior and the front faces with their mesh safety-barrier screens are all in the box — there is no separate front to buy. from $5,299.

Choose the DRT35ST if you want one fireplace serving two spaces — a wall between living room and den, or a room divider — in a compact 39-7/8" x 37-1/4" framed opening, including in a bedroom or a manufactured home: the electronic models are listed by PFS for both.

It is not right if there is no route to an outside wall or roof — this is a sealed direct-vent firebox and it has to vent out, top or rear, so an interior room with no venting path needs a vent-free or an electric model instead. And if you only want the fire visible from one side, Superior's single-sided DRT3035 gives you a 35" traditional firebox without the second glass face.

Specifications

Frame an opening 39-7/8" wide by 37-1/4" high by 20-3/4" deep with 5/8" drywall (21" with 1/2"), in minimum 2 x 4 studs. Clearances run 1/2" at the sides (0" from the spacers), 5" above the top, 0" at the floor and 72" from the bottom of the unit to the ceiling; an unprotected side wall keeps 5", and a combustible mantel is charted from 9" at 2" of depth to 19" at 12". It vents on 4.5"/7.5" Secure Vent rigid, Secure Flex, or the approved Z-FLEX GA alternate. Listed by PFS to ANSI Z21.88, report F14-165, for elevations to 4,500 ft.

How the DRT35ST compares to the DRT40ST

Superior's other traditional see-through is the 40" DRT40ST at from $6,069 — the louverless Custom Series firebox, rated 37,000 BTU/hr on natural gas in a 48-1/2"-wide frame. This 35" is the louvered Pro Series version: 30,000 BTU/hr, a 39-7/8" framing width for tighter walls, and the higher 74.8% AFUE rating — from $5,299.

Answers to common questions

What’s included, what’s required, and what’s optional?
  • Included in the box: 30,000 BTU/hr (natural gas); Electronic intermittent pilot ignition; Tempered glass; Deluxe split-oak log set; Glowing ember media; Painted black interior liner; Front face assemblies with mesh safety-barrier screens, and hoods for both sides; On/off rocker switch with wire harness; ANSI Z21.88 certified (PFS listed); 20-year limited warranty.
  • Required to complete the installation, purchased separately: Venting - Secure Vent, Secure Flex or Z-FLEX GA 4.5"/7.5" pipe and a termination sized for your run; Gas line and 120 VAC household power - run by a qualified installer; the electronic ignition requires household power.
  • Optional: The buff Brick Liner Kit (an appearance upgrade), a blower kit, and a remote, wall switch or timer — the fireplace operates fully without them.
Will it work if the power goes out?

Plan for it to be off during an outage — the DRT35ST is electronic ignition only, the manual requires external electrical power to operate it, and it lists no battery-backup provision for the ignition. If running through outages matters to you, look at Superior's millivolt models such as the BRT40ST see-through, which light with a piezo igniter and use no household electricity.

How do I vent it?

Top or rear, on the 4.5" inner / 7.5" outer components the appliance is listed with — Superior's Secure Vent rigid pipe, Secure Flex, or the approved Z-FLEX Model GA alternate from Flexmaster. The square SV4.5HT-2 horizontal termination and the SV4.5CGV-1 vertical cap are the standard terminations. Send us your wall build-up and we will size the run with you.

Can I put a TV on a shelf above it?

Yes — the manual describes these fireplaces as uniquely suited to a utility shelf directly above, commonly used for television sets, and charts the minimum shelf heights: 37-1/4" from the base of the appliance with side venting straight out the back, or 49-1/2" (Secure Vent) to 51-1/4" (Secure Flex) with top venting and one 90-degree elbow. Do not insulate the space above the appliance, and remember anything above it is exposed to elevated temperatures.

Where can it go — bedrooms, mobile homes, two rooms?

Almost anywhere with a venting path: the electronic models are listed by PFS for bedrooms and for manufactured or mobile homes, and Massachusetts adds its own licensed-installer and CO-detector requirements. As a room divider, one end may sit flush with a perpendicular wall, but the wall at the other end must not extend beyond the front edge; no hearth extension is required, and on carpet or vinyl it sits on a metal or wood barrier covering the bottom.

Can I run it on propane?

Yes — by choosing the propane option on this page, which adds Superior's certified electronic conversion kit (GCK-35STENP) to the order. The fireplace itself ships built for natural gas; a qualified service agency installs the kit in the field, and on propane the rating is 28,000 BTU/hr against 30,000 on natural gas.

How does the warranty work if something goes wrong?

Superior warrants the fireplace, and The Torch Guys handles it for you — we register the appliance and, if you ever need to claim, we deal with the manufacturer on your behalf rather than handing you a phone number. Keep your invoice and the model number; we hold the rest on file.

Warranty

In the unlikely event your product experiences a defect, our technical team will guide you through the manufacturer’s warranty process. Here is a general outline of what to expect.

Due to the technical nature of our products, the manufacturer must perform troubleshooting to process a warranty claim. Your installer will need to troubleshoot the problem on-site while working in tandem with our technical team. If troubleshooting leads to what The Torch Guys deems as a defective part, we will submit a warranty claim to the manufacturer on your behalf. Before we submit the claim, we will ask you to review the terms and confirm your consent to proceed.

Once the claim is submitted, the manufacturer will review it and either approve or deny it. If they have all the information and accept the claim, your warranty replacement part(s) will begin processing for shipment. If, for any reason, the claim is denied or we need more information, we will notify you as soon as possible.

All warranties are processed as exchanges. You can expect to receive a prepaid return label for the defective part(s), which must be returned within 30 days of receiving the warranty replacement(s).

Warranty claims can take anywhere from 1-4 weeks to process, depending on the season. Given the length of time claims can take, we recommend you fire up your unit in late summer/early fall to ensure your existing fireplace is in good working order for the winter season.
