A 45" traditional direct-vent gas fireplace with a 39-1/4" by 24-1/2" view of the fire and the remote control in the box. The Superior DRT4245 is sealed combustion — it takes its air from outside and vents out the top, to a roof or through-the-wall termination, so it needs a route up or out rather than a chimney. Natural gas runs 42,000 BTU/hr high at 62.7% P4 efficiency; propane runs 41,000 BTU/hr high at 62.4%. It is not right if there is no route up or out. This is a sealed, top-vent direct-vent firebox: it draws combustion air from outside, and the vent leaves the top of the unit before terminating through the roof or a side wall. For an interior room with no venting path, a vent-free or an electric model is the one to look at instead.
Specifications
Frame an opening 45-7/8" wide and 23" deep with the fireplace face flush to framing — that is the minimum opening size, and an additional 1/8" per side is recommended — allowing 55-3/4" of height at minimum for the top-vent installation. Combustible mantel and side-wall clearances are read off drawings — see Figure 6 and Figure 5 on page 16 of the installation manual; the floor needs no clearance, though on carpeting or vinyl tile the unit sits on a metal or wood panel its full width and depth. It vents on 4.5"/7.5" Secure Vent rigid, Secure Flex or Z-Flex Model GA components, with at minimum a 1-foot vertical section before any elbow; the SV4.5HT-2 square termination handles horizontal runs and the SV4.5CGV-1 cap handles vertical ones. Will it work if the power goes out?
Yes — every DRT4245 uses electronic intermittent pilot ignition with battery backup, and four AA batteries keep the fireplace lighting and operating through an outage. On the DRT4200 series the backup batteries live in the remote receiver behind the wall-switch plate; install fresh ones before every burn season. The blower is the exception: it needs mains power and will not run until power returns.
How do I vent it?
Out the top, on 4.5"/7.5" Secure Vent rigid pipe, Secure Flex, or Z-Flex Model GA — the three vent systems the manual approves — terminating vertically through the roof or horizontally through a wall. DRT4200 series models must use, at a minimum, a 1-foot vertical section before connecting an elbow, and a top-vent installation needs 55-3/4" of framing height at minimum. The SV4.5HT-2 square termination handles horizontal runs and the SV4.5CGV-1 high-wind cap handles vertical ones. Send us your wall build-up and we will size the run with you.
How close can a mantel sit above it?
Combustible mantel clearance depends on how deep the mantel is — see Figure 6 on page 16 of the installation manual, and Figure 5 on the same page for combustible side walls. You can also send us your mantel depth. We're here to help! A combustible shelf over the top-vent run must clear 68" from the fireplace base with a rigid elbow, 70" with a flex elbow.
Can it go in a bedroom or a manufactured home?
Yes — the DRT4245 is listed for installation in bedrooms and in manufactured (mobile) homes, following the manual's Manufactured Home Requirements section, and it is approved at elevations up to 4,500 ft on the standard burner orifices. Local codes govern the installation either way.
How does the warranty work if something goes wrong?
