Mega-Flame Outdoor Vent Free Gas Log Burner
The stainless steel burner under Superior's Mega-Flame Outdoor log sets, sold on its own: a cantilevered triple burner on an outdoor base and grate, 40,000 BTU/hr on high and 29,000 on low, on natural gas or propane, from $1,659. Choose the bare burner if you already have the logs — a Giant Timbers or Mossy Oak set that outlived its burner, or a burner you are replacing after a season too many outdoors. Pick the size by the LOGS you own, not by the fireplace: 24" or 30" logs sit on the 24" burner, 36" logs on the 30". Then pick how it lights. The millivolt burner has a standing pilot you light by hand and a HI-LO knob, and it is remote ready, so an on/off wall switch or an on/off remote can be added as a kit. The electronic-ignition burner sparks itself from a battery pack and comes with a hand-held remote for on, off, high and low. If you do not already own the logs, buy the log set instead — it comes with the burner.
It is not a complete fire: no logs come with it, and it is listed only for Superior's Mega-Flame concrete log sets. It is not an indoor burner: it installs in an outdoor fireplace, and the spot has to stay open — walls all round with no overhead cover, an overhead cover with no more than two side walls, or an overhead cover with three side walls where at least 30% of the enclosure's horizontal periphery is permanently open. It is not for the sleeping room of a mobile home and not for a recreational vehicle. And there is no 36" burner in this family: a 36" log set runs on the 30" burner.
Specifications
Both burners are rated 40,000 BTU/hr high and 29,000 low on natural gas and on propane, with a 1/2" NPT inlet to the appliance regulator — 5" to 10.5" W.C. inlet on natural gas, 11" to 14" from an installer-supplied external regulator on propane. The firebox has to suit the LOG SET the burner will carry: 32-1/2" front width, 22-1/2" rear, 28" high and 15-1/2" deep for 24" logs; 39" and 26-3/8" for 30" logs; 47" and 33", 28" high and 20" deep for 36" logs. Keep 16" from the opening to a side wall and 42" to the ceiling, 36" of clear floor in front, and noncombustible facing at least 8" above the opening — the black hood is required if that facing is under 12". Mantel shelf clearances are charted in Figures 4 and 5 on page 7 of the installation manual and shorten when the hood is fitted.

The 24" burner takes Superior's 24" or 30" Giant Timbers or Mossy Oak sets, the 30" burner the 36" sets, and the small switch log that houses the millivolt burner's AUTO/OFF/ON switch comes in the log carton; An outdoor fireplace — a site-built wood-burning fireplace, a UL 127 wood-burning fireplace designed for outdoor use, or an unvented outdoor fireplace with no flue — sized for the log set the burner will carry, with noncombustible facing at least 8" above the opening and its screen in place. Optional: The black fireplace hood, which is required where the noncombustible facing above your opening is under 12" and otherwise just pushes heat away from a mantel shelf. The on/off wall switch and on/off remote are chosen above as Ignition kits, not bought twice below.
Which burner size do I need?
Go by the logs, not the fireplace. The 24" burner carries Superior's 24" and 30" Mega-Flame log sets; the 30" burner carries the 36" sets. There is no 36" burner in this family, so a 36" log set is not short of anything — it is designed around the 30" burner. If you are matching a burner to logs you already own, the size is cast into the log set's own part numbers.
Where does this go? Can I use it indoors?
It goes in an outdoor fireplace — a site-built wood-burning fireplace, a UL 127 wood-burning fireplace designed for outdoor use, or an unvented outdoor fireplace, which is why no flue or chimney is needed. It is an outdoor appliance: Superior certifies it as an outdoor decorative gas appliance to ANSI Z21.97 and the burner is marked for outdoor use only, so it does not go indoors or in an enclosed space. A covered spot counts as outdoors only while it stays open — walls all round with no overhead cover, an overhead cover with no more than two side walls, or an overhead cover with three side walls where at least 30% of the enclosure's horizontal periphery is permanently open. A propane supply tank is never placed inside any structure either.
Millivolt or electronic ignition — which should I pick?
The millivolt burner has a standing pilot you light by hand: turn the control knob to PILOT, press the igniter button, hold the knob in for thirty seconds. After that you run it from the HI-LO knob and the AUTO/OFF/ON switch that lives in the small switch log — which comes in the LOG carton, so if you are replacing a burner you already have it. It runs on the pilot's own thermopile and needs no power, and it is remote ready, so the On/Off Wall Switch and On/Off Remote choices are the same burner with the switch kit or remote kit added and wired to the valve at installation. The electronic-ignition burner is a different part number with a different valve: a control module sparks the burner itself and it comes with a hand-held remote for on, off, high and low flame. It runs on batteries — four AA in the burner's pack and one in the remote, both supplied — and must never be wired to household power.
What about volcanic stone and embers?
Volcanic stone comes in the box. It goes around the base of the burner on the fireplace floor to look like an ash bed, and it must never sit on the burner itself — nor must loose log scraps. Glowing embers are not part of an outdoor burner.
Who installs it, and what should I know about living with it?
A qualified installer, service agency or the gas supplier installs and services it, with the fireplace off and cold; the base is screwed to the fireplace floor so it cannot shift when you work the controls, and the fireplace screen goes back in place before it is run, with any glass doors fully open. Clean the burner's air inlet holes every three months in season, have it inspected yearly. Above 4,500 feet the pilot may not stay lit, and propane installations need a tank of at least 100 lb.
Does buying from The Torch Guys affect my Superior warranty?
No. The Torch Guys is an authorized Superior dealer, and Superior's Gas Log Set Limited Three Year Warranty covers product bought through a listed supplier: three years on the grate, one year on gas components and the remote control, 90 days on other parts, with labour at the manufacturer's rates for the component's period. It stays with the original owner at the original installation. Keep your invoice and the model and serial numbers from the burner's data plate, and we handle the claim with the manufacturer for you.
