Multi-Sided Vent Free Gas Logs
Five ceramic fiber logs shaped to be looked at from every side, on a 39,000 BTU/hr vent free burner that needs no chimney, no electricity and no batteries. The Superior Multi-Sided log set is made for see-through, peninsula and island fireboxes with more than one opening — and works in a standard firebox too. Pick natural gas or propane and the control you want under Ignition, from the burner's own knob to a wall switch, an on/off remote or a thermostatic remote, from $1,609. The firebox needs 32" of width, 17" of height and 19" of depth, and the logs and grate carry a 3-year warranty.
Choose it if your fireplace is open on two or more sides — a see-through between two rooms, a peninsula or an island — and a single-sided log stack would show its plain back to one of them. It fits a solid-fuel-burning masonry fireplace, a UL127 factory-built fireplace or a listed vent free firebox whose firebox is at least 32" wide, 17" high and 19" deep, with 16" to a side wall and 42" to the ceiling — but never a factory-built fireplace whose own instructions state it has not been tested or should not be used with unvented gas logs. Every Ignition choice includes the logs and the burner; the wall switch, on/off remote and thermostatic remote are wired to the valve at install.
It is not right if you want primary heat — it is a supplemental heater — or if the room is a bedroom or bathroom, which an unvented heater may never occupy. It is not for a recreational vehicle, a fireplace that will run with glass doors closed, a windy or drafty spot, or a room that cannot give it the fresh air an unvented heater draws — 1,950 cubic feet on its own. Above 4,500 feet the pilot may not hold. And it will not fit a firebox under 32" wide, 17" high or 19" deep.
Specifications
Minimum firebox size is 32" wide, 17" high and 19" deep — one set of firebox minimums for the 27" log set, 32" at the rear as well as the front, with no separate requirement per open face. Vent free, the fireplace needs 16" from its side to a side wall, 42" from the top of the opening to the ceiling and 36" of clearance in front; noncombustible material at least 1/2" thick must rise at least 8" above every opening — 12" or more needs nothing else, and the adjustable GA6050 hood is what makes a facing of only 8" to 12" work; under 8" the material has to be extended to at least 8", and if it cannot be, this is not the right firebox for the set. A combustible mantel's height depends on its depth and is charted in Figures 6 and 7 on page 10 of the installation manual. At floor level keep 14" to combustible flooring, or set the burner 5" above it. The burner draws 39,000 BTU/hr maximum and 20,000 minimum on either gas — 5" to 10.5" w.c. inlet on natural gas, 11" to 14" w.c. on propane through an external regulator — with no electrical connection of any kind.

Which Ignition choice should I pick, and what does each control do?
All four choices are the same 39,000 BTU/hr millivolt burner, lit with its push-button piezo igniter — no electricity or batteries to light it. "Standing Pilot - Manual" is the set as it comes, run from the knob and switch on the burner. "On/Off Wall Switch" adds the GWMS2 wall-mount switch kit. "On/Off Remote" adds the RCKIT4001 hand-held remote and receiver with a white wall plate. "Thermostatic Remote" adds the TRC remote and receiver, which runs the set manually or holds a room temperature. Every control wires to the valve at install; the burner is the same whichever you choose.
What size fireplace does it need, and does it have to be a see-through?
The opening must be at least 32" wide, 17" high and 19" deep. It does not have to be a see-through — the set is designed for see-through, peninsula and island fireboxes with several openings, and it also installs in a standard firebox. Where the firebox is open on more than one side, every opening needs its own noncombustible facing above it; the firebox minimums are a single set of numbers for the 27" log set, not a separate width requirement per face. In a masonry or factory-built fireplace the chimney flue and firebox are cleaned first and any outside-air ducts or ash dumps are sealed; in a manufactured firebox, the firebox maker's own clearances also apply.
Does it need a chimney or a vent?
No. It is an unvented room heater that burns room air and runs with the flue damper closed, so no heat goes up the chimney — the ODS safety pilot shuts it off if the room runs short of fresh air, which is why the room must hold about 1,950 cubic feet for this set alone (50 cubic feet per 1,000 BTU/hr of every gas appliance in it) or be opened to an adjoining room or outdoors. State and local codes in some areas prohibit vent free appliances, and no unvented heater may go in a bedroom or bathroom, so check your codes before you buy.
How close can a mantel or the ceiling be?
The clearances are the same whichever one you choose. Running vent free, the ceiling must be at least 42" above the top of the fireplace opening, a side wall 16" from the side of the fireplace, and combustible material 36" from the front. The facing directly above every opening must be noncombustible — slate, marble, tile or similar at least 1/2" thick and at least 8" tall — 12" or more needs no hood, and the GA6050 fireplace hood is what makes a facing of only 8" to 12" work. Combustible mantel clearance depends on how deep the mantel is — see Figure 6 (no hood) and Figure 7 (with the hood) on page 10 of the installation manual, and a combustible projection beside the fireplace is charted in Figure 4 on page 9. Will it work in a power outage?
Yes, whichever one you choose — nothing on this page uses house current, and the heater is never wired to an external electrical source. The piezo igniter lights the pilot by hand, the millivolt valve is powered by its own thermopile, and the wall switch or the battery-powered remotes keep running it when the lights are out. It is built as a supplemental heater, but during an outage it can carry the room as the primary heat source.
Does buying from The Torch Guys affect my Superior warranty?
No. Superior warrants the log set through its listed suppliers, and The Torch Guys is an authorized Superior dealer — we register the set and, if you ever need to claim, we deal with the manufacturer on your behalf rather than handing you a phone number. The logs and grate carry a 3-year limited warranty, gas components and a remote control one year from installation, and coverage stays with the original owner. Keep your invoice and the model number from the data plate on the grate; we hold the rest on file.
