Choose the VRE6036 if you want the industry-leading 30" opening height and a real brick interior in an outdoor gas installation, and you would rather pick the brick color, the pattern and the log set yourself. It installs built-in, in a corner, or freestanding under an approved cabinet mantel.
It is not right if you want to burn wood. The manual is categorical — no wood fires in this firebox, and nothing beyond the listed gas log set goes in it. Superior's WRE6000 outdoor wood-burning masonry fireplaces are the same three sizes with the same Mosaic Masonry brick, built for real wood; and if you want an outdoor gas fireplace that burns out of the crate in one order, the VRE4300 series ships with its log set, burner and ignition in the box.
Specifications
Frame a straight-wall installation to a 45-3/8" wide by 54-5/8" high by 28-1/4" deep rough opening (Figure 8); a corner installation sets that same opening between two 61" angled walls, 86-1/2" across the corner — in 2 x 4 lumber or heavier, maintaining the framing clearance at the sides and back given in Figure 8 on page 10 of the installation manual (not required at the nailing flanges). The cabinet is 45-1/8" wide by 54-1/2" tall. Ceiling clearance above the top of the firebox opening is set by the manual — see Figure 6 on page 9 of the installation manual; floor clearance is 0", and on carpeting or tile other than wood flooring it sits on a metal or wood panel spanning the enclosure. A 1/2" black iron gas line enters through knockouts on either side. Listed by PFS, report F09-130.

The three VRE6000 sizes share the same construction, 30" opening height, sixteen-set Mosaic Masonry liner range and 40,000 BTU/hr log-set ceiling; they differ in width. This 36" takes a log set into a 36" x 19" interior at from $4,469, against the 42" at from $4,629 and the 50" at from $4,809. Answers to common questions
Does it need a chimney, a vent, or electricity?
No — whichever liner you order, the firebox itself needs none of the three. It is a vent-free firebox enclosure: there is no flue at all, and the firebox has no electrical components of its own. What it does need is a 1/2" black iron gas line run through the knockouts on either side by a qualified installer, and the vent-free log set you install brings its own controls and requirements.

Which log sets fit?
Any listed vent-free gas log set that meets the approvals fits — for the outdoor application the manual requires a set certified to ANSI Z21.97 at up to 40,000 BTU/hr, and Superior shows its own Giant Timbers OD and Mossy Oak OD sets and recommends a Superior set for best results. For physical fit, the interior measures 36" across the front, 22-1/2" across the rear, 19" deep and 30" tall — check those against the log set's minimum-firebox table. Where can it go — does a covered patio count?
Any location that meets the manual's enclosure conditions — walls on all sides with no overhead cover, an overhead cover with no more than two side walls, or an overhead cover with three side walls where at least 30% of the perimeter stays permanently open. It can never go in a recreational vehicle, a high-traffic spot, or a windy or drafty location, and above 4,500 feet a vent-free heater's pilot can drop out. How do the brick panels install?
The same way for every liner set — after the firebox is set in its permanent location. The side and rear firebrick walls angle into slots and secure with the retaining brackets provided, and the manual recommends grouting the joints for a more finished look; a bag of cement and a bag of sand are provided, and the fireplace waits 72 hours after grouting before its first fire.
How close can a mantel or finish materials sit?
A mantel shelf above a built-in installation follows the manual's depth chart, measured from the top of the hood opening: a shelf up to 1-1/2" deep sits at least 12" up, up to 6-3/4" deep at least 16", and up to 12" deep at least 20" — and those minimums replace whatever the log set's papers say. Wall board above the firebox may be combustible, and combustible finishes may butt to the sides and top but never overlap the front facing; brick or tile may overlap the facing with noncombustible mortar, so long as no opening is covered.
How does the warranty work if something goes wrong?
Superior warrants the firebox, and The Torch Guys handles it for you — we register the appliance and, if you ever need to claim, we deal with the manufacturer on your behalf rather than handing you a phone number. The product body and firebox carry a 20-year limited warranty. Keep your invoice and the model number; we hold the rest on file.
