About This Product

Superior VRL6048 48" Linear Vent Free Gas Fireplace

No vent, no chimney, no heat lost up a flue. The Superior VRL6048 is the 48" Signature Series linear vent-free: 35,000 BTU/hr high / 28,000 low on natural gas, electronic ignition with battery backup and a selectable standing pilot for cold climates, with two bags of Platinum crushed glass, halogen accent lighting and the black porcelain liner already in the box. from $5,779, with a 20-year limited warranty on the body, firebox and barrier.

Choose the VRL6048 if you want Superior's Signature-grade 48" linear flame on a wall with no route for a vent — or a see-through opening between two rooms, which the optional conversion kits make of this same firebox — and your space meets the vent-free sizing rule of 50 cubic feet of room volume per 1,000 BTU/hr.

It is not right for a bedroom or a bathroom — the manual prohibits vent-free installation in both, everywhere — or as a home's primary heat source, or above 4,500 ft of elevation. For a bedroom-approved fireplace in this same linear format, look at Superior's direct-vent DRL series instead; it vents through the wall or roof and is listed for bedroom installation.

Specifications

Give the cabinet 84" from its base to the ceiling, in an enclosure at least 60" tall — 84" with the HeatFlo kit. It is a zero-clearance design: combustibles sit at 0" on the floor, against the standoffs and nailing-flange spacers, 1/2" off the side wrapper and 3/4" off the back. Keep furniture and other flammables 36" off the front and 42" off the top; combustible side-wall clearance is read off Figure 5A on page 14 of the installation manual, and a hearth extension is not required. Listed by PFS TECO to ANSI Z21.11.2 as an unvented room heater, report F22-809, for elevations to 4,500 ft.

How the VRL6048 Signature compares to the VRL3000 Pro sizes

All three are vent-free linears with electronic ignition, battery backup and Platinum crushed glass. The Signature runs the highest output of the three — 35,000 BTU/hr high on natural gas at from $5,779 — ships the black porcelain liner standard where the Pro models ship a painted interior, and it alone takes the see-through conversion kits. The Pro-series VRL3045 (23,000 BTU/hr high) is from $3,899 and the VRL3055 (28,000 BTU/hr high) is from $4,399.

Features

  • Vent free — no vent run, no chimney, no heat lost up a flue; it installs against an interior or exterior wall
  • 35,000 BTU/hr high / 28,000 low on natural gas, modulated across six flame levels from the hand-held remote
  • Battery backup lights it through a power outage — the one heater the manual says may then serve as primary heat
  • Black porcelain liner, two bags of Platinum crushed glass and warm-white halogen accent lighting ship standard
  • Selectable pilot — intermittent for fuel savings or a continuous standing pilot for cold climates
  • Oxygen Depletion Sensing (ODS) pilot shuts the fireplace off if the room runs short of fresh air

Answers to common questions

Does it really need no vent or chimney at all?

Correct — the VRL6048 is an unvented room heater: it burns clean, vents nothing outside, and loses no heat up a flue. What it does need is room air. The manual sizes the space at 50 cubic feet of volume per 1,000 BTU/hr of gas appliances in it, and an Oxygen Depletion Sensing pilot shuts the fireplace down if fresh air runs short. One honest note from the manual: vent-free heat adds moisture to the air, so an under-ventilated room can grow mildew — if your room is small or tight, tell us the dimensions and we will run the sizing with you.

Will it work if the power goes out?

Yes — every VRL6048 has battery backup built in. With four AA batteries in the control-compartment holder, the unit switches to battery power automatically and lights with no line power, and the manual notes a power outage is the one time this supplemental heater may serve as your primary heat source. The accent lighting and the blowers are the exception — they stay off until power returns.

Can it go in a bedroom, or in a manufactured home?

A manufactured home yes, a bedroom no. The manual prohibits installing this vent-free fireplace in a bedroom or bathroom (Massachusetts law repeats the ban and adds its own 527 CMR 30 requirements), and it also rules out RVs, high-traffic spots, and windy or drafty locations. An aftermarket, permanently located manufactured or mobile home is approved where local codes allow, grounded to the chassis. If the fireplace is for a bedroom, Superior's direct-vent DRL linears are the bedroom-listed route.

How big does the room need to be?

Big enough to feed the fire its air — the worksheet is simple: multiply the room's volume (length x width x height, plus any open adjoining rooms) by 20; that is the maximum BTU/hr the space supports. At 35,000 BTU/hr high on natural gas the VRL6048 wants roughly 1,750 cubic feet — about a 15 x 15 room with 8-foot ceilings — before any other gas appliance shares the space. A smaller room is not a dead end: ventilation grills or an opened doorway to the next room count toward the volume.

What’s included, what’s required, and what’s optional?
  • Included in the box: 35,000 BTU/hr high / 28,000 low on natural gas; 34,000 / 27,000 on propane; Electronic Ignition System (SIT Proflame II, IPI/CPI selectable) with battery backup; Proflame II full-function hand-held remote with four AA batteries; Two 5 lb bags of Platinum reflective glass media (use no more than 8 lbs); Black porcelain firebox liner — the standard interior; Halogen accent lighting; Screen barrier (must be installed), burner draft shield glass panel, non-combustible fireboard set, and factory gas flex line with shutoff valve; ANSI Z21.11.2 listed (PFS TECO Report F22-809); 20-year limited warranty on body, firebox, and barrier.
  • Required to complete the installation, purchased separately: Gas Line - natural gas or propane to match the model, run by a qualified installer; propane systems need a 100 lb minimum supply tank; Electrical - a 120 VAC, 60 Hz supply; the electronic ignition must be connected to main power; Combustion Air - a room that meets the vent-free sizing of 50 cu ft per 1,000 BTU/hr; no vent or chimney is needed.
  • Optional: A crushed glass, river rock or driftwood media upgrade over the standard Platinum glass, and a reflective glass liner upgrade over the standard porcelain; The Indoor or Indoor/Outdoor See-Thru conversion kits, the HeatFlo convection kit, and the black Linear Trim Kit — the fireplace operates fully without them.
Can I mount a TV above it?

Only the way the manual draws it — with the optional HeatFlo heat-management kit installed and a mantel: the manual requires a minimum 6" mantel at 12" for any television installation. With HeatFlo, keep the TV at least 22" above the fireplace opening on a flush wall (or a recessed pocket at least 18" above the opening, no deeper than 3-1/2"), at least 76" from the base of the fireplace, with the vent opening 3" below the TV and 6" below the ceiling. It defers to your TV maker's own temperature limit either way.

Do I have to buy the media or the liner upgrades?

No — the firebox is complete as it ships, with two bags of Platinum crushed glass and the black porcelain liner. The upgrades only change the look: crushed glass in Reflective Black or Reflective Blue (two bags dress this firebox), the 25-piece River Rock kit, or the driftwood-and-rock combination kit over the media bed; and on the interior, the reflective glass liner in place of the porcelain — unless you plan a see-through conversion, which the glass liner does not fit.

How does the warranty work if something goes wrong?

Superior warrants the VRL6048 — 20 years limited on the body, firebox and barrier, one year on the burner and gas components — and The Torch Guys handles it for you: we register the appliance and, if you ever need to claim, we deal with the manufacturer on your behalf rather than handing you a phone number. Keep your invoice and the model number; we hold the rest on file.

Warranty

In the unlikely event your product experiences a defect, our technical team will guide you through the manufacturer’s warranty process. Here is a general outline of what to expect.

Due to the technical nature of our products, the manufacturer must perform troubleshooting to process a warranty claim. Your installer will need to troubleshoot the problem on-site while working in tandem with our technical team. If troubleshooting leads to what The Torch Guys deems as a defective part, we will submit a warranty claim to the manufacturer on your behalf. Before we submit the claim, we will ask you to review the terms and confirm your consent to proceed.

Once the claim is submitted, the manufacturer will review it and either approve or deny it. If they have all the information and accept the claim, your warranty replacement part(s) will begin processing for shipment. If, for any reason, the claim is denied or we need more information, we will notify you as soon as possible.

All warranties are processed as exchanges. You can expect to receive a prepaid return label for the defective part(s), which must be returned within 30 days of receiving the warranty replacement(s).

Warranty claims can take anywhere from 1-4 weeks to process, depending on the season. Given the length of time claims can take, we recommend you fire up your unit in late summer/early fall to ensure your existing fireplace is in good working order for the winter season.
