Choose the WRE3042 if you want a real wood fire on a patio or in an outdoor room at a 42" scale without building a masonry fireplace — it frames like a factory-built firebox, burns seasoned cordwood on a steel grate, and the white brick interior is a pattern you pick rather than a fixed look. It is also listed for residential installation if the same firebox ends up indoors.
It is not right if there is no route for at least 8 feet of vertical chimney above the firebox, or if you want a fire that starts at the turn of a knob with no wood to season and no ash to carry. For a chimney-free outdoor space, look at a vent-free outdoor firebox like Superior's VRE4500 series, or an outdoor gas fireplace, instead.
Specifications
Frame an opening 49-3/4" wide, 47-1/4" high and 23-1/2" deep with the header turned on the vertical edge, holding 3/4" of airspace at the back and sides — not required at the nailing flanges — with 40" to the ceiling and 12" from a perpendicular wall to the opening. The chimney runs 8" IHP snap-lock double-wall pipe from the 12" collar and its provided starter: 8 feet of system height minimum outdoors with at least 4 feet of pipe sections, 14.5 feet residential, 50 feet maximum, capped with a listed round or chase-top termination. In front, a noncombustible hearth extension 66" x 20", running 12" past each side of the opening, protects a combustible floor, with the provided ember protector under the front edge. Outdoors, the enclosure must allow drainage and fresh-air ventilation. Listed to UL 127 / CAN/ULC-S610.

Optional: Bi-fold glass doors (BDO42, black), the drain pan (DP42 — recommended under the fireplace outdoors), the stainless hood (HS42 — required only if you run a vent-free gas log), outside air kits (AK4 / AK4F), and a gas line with a vented or vent-free gas log set — the fireplace burns wood fully without them.
What chimney does it need, and is it in the box?
The chimney run itself is sold separately — what ships with the fireplace is the 12" vent collar and the starter collar that converts it to the 8" standard chimney. From there it runs IHP 8" snap-lock double-wall wood-burning pipe (8DM; the stainless 8HT is required in Canada along with the cold-air kit): outdoors the system must reach at least 8 feet from the base of the fireplace to the flue outlet with a minimum of 4 feet of pipe sections, a residential run needs 14.5 feet, and 50 feet is the maximum, capped with a listed round or chase-top termination at least 3 feet above the roof. Can it really go outside?
Yes — it is a residential and outdoor wood-burning fireplace, and outdoor installation is what this page sells it for. The enclosure you build around it must allow adequate drainage and fresh-air ventilation, and Superior recommends a sealed, corrosion-resistant drain pan (the DP42) under the fireplace inside the enclosure. The same firebox is also listed for installation inside the house, and in an aftermarket manufactured or mobile home — though never in a sleeping room.
Can I burn gas logs in it instead of wood?
Yes — the fireplace is approved for a vented gas log set (ANSI Z21.60 or Z21.84) with the damper removed or locked fully open and the doors fully open, or for a vent-free set listed to ANSI Z21.11.2 — and a vent-free set additionally requires the HS42 stainless hood. A 1/2" black iron gas line runs in through the knockouts. Never operate an unvented log set with the chimney removed.
What does it need for the floor?
The firebox itself sits at 0" on the floor — over carpet or tile it goes on a metal or wood panel its full width and depth. In front, build a noncombustible hearth extension 66" x 20", running 12" past each side of the opening, and set the provided ember protector between it and the fireplace.
How does the warranty work if something goes wrong?
Superior warrants the fireplace, and The Torch Guys handles it for you — we register the appliance and, if you ever need to claim, we deal with the manufacturer on your behalf rather than handing you a phone number. The body, firebox and ceramic glass carry a 20-year limited warranty. Keep your invoice and the model number; we hold the rest on file.
