About This Product

Superior WRT2042 42" Radiant Wood-Burning Fireplace

A 42" radiant wood-burning fireplace with an insulated firebox and a full white stacked refractory interior. The Superior WRT2042 is a UL127-listed factory-built fireplace with the clean, smooth face of the pair — no louvers — so the finish material runs right up to the black metal edge. Frame it into a flat wall or a corner, run 8" snap-lock double-wall chimney up through the roof, and burn dry, well-seasoned hardwood; a built-in gas line knockout keeps the door open to a gas log set later. from $1,249.

Choose the WRT2042 if you want a 42" wood fire and the cleaner look — the radiant model has no louvers to work a surround around, and it is the lower-priced of the two 42" faces. Heat comes off the fire and the glass front the traditional way.

It is not right if there is no straight route up through the roof — this is a natural-draft wood fireplace that needs at least 14.5 feet of vertical 8" chimney terminating above the roofline, and it is a supplemental-heat fire, not a furnace. If you need to vent out a side wall, or want fire at the press of a button, a direct-vent gas fireplace such as the Superior DRT3000 series is the one to look at instead. And if you want a blower pushing warm air into the room, use the louvered WCT2042 — blowers do not fit this radiant model.

Specifications

Frame an opening 44-1/4" wide by 37-5/8" high by 22" deep — corner framing dimensions are published too. Keep 3/4" of air space at the back and sides (not required at the nailing flanges), 12" from a perpendicular wall to the opening, and 1" around the chimney pipe. Combustible trim clearance above the fireplace opening is read off Figures 4 and 5 on page 6 of the installation manual. In front, lay noncombustible floor protection 20" deep and 12" past each side of the opening (66" x 20"). The chimney runs 14.5 to 50 feet of 8" snap-lock double-wall pipe with up to two 30-degree elbow sets. Listed to UL127, PFS report F09-171.

How the WRT2042 compares to the other WRT/WCT 2000 models

Same firebox family, two decisions. Face: the WRT2042 is the radiant, clean-face model at from $1,249; the louvered WCT2042 adds the circulating face and blower capability at from $1,299. Size: the WRT2036 steps the opening down to 36" at from $1,069 — frame to the size you pick.

Features

  • 42" wood-burning firebox with a full smooth white stacked refractory interior
  • Radiant clean-face design — a smooth front with no louvers above or below the opening
  • Insulated firebox — the WSI build is the one the book prices
  • Burns seasoned wood, or takes a vented gas log or vent-free log heater through the built-in gas line knockout
  • Vents on 8" snap-lock double-wall chimney, straight up or offset to 30 degrees, in a wall or a corner
  • UL127-listed factory-built fireplace, approved for aftermarket mobile and manufactured homes

Answers to common questions

What chimney does it use, and is any of it included?

None of the chimney ships with the firebox — it is all configured to your roof. The WRT2042 vents on Superior's 8" snap-lock double-wall wood-burning chimney: standard 8DM pipe, or Hi-Temp 8HT stainless, which Canada requires along with a Cold Air Kit. Plan at least 14.5 feet from the base of the fireplace to the flue outlet (22 feet with two elbow sets, 50 feet maximum), a firestop at every floor penetration, and a listed round-top or chase termination 3 feet above the roof penetration. Send us your roof height and we will size the run with you.

What’s included, what’s required, and what’s optional?
  • Included in the box: White stacked refractory interior panels; Wood-burning grate and mesh screen assemblies; Factory-fitted damper; Gas-line knockout and conduit; UL127 / CAN/ULC-S610 listed (PFS); 20-year limited warranty.
  • Required to complete the installation, purchased separately: Venting - IHP 8" chimney (8DM, or 8HT for Canada): pipe sections, firestop spacers, roof flashing, storm collar and a listed termination sized to your run; Floor Protection - noncombustible floor protection extending 20" in front and 12" beyond each side of the opening, plus a galvanized ember protector strip under the front edge (site-supplied).
  • Optional: Bi-fold glass doors, the outside air kit (sidewall or floor), and refractory stain kits — the fireplace burns wood without any of them. No blower on this radiant model.
Can I burn gas logs in it instead of wood?

Yes. The fireplace is approved for wood, for a vented gas log set listed to ANSI Z21.60 or Z21.84, and for a vent-free gas log heater listed to ANSI Z21.11.2 — the vent-free option requires the IHP hood (GA6050). A gas line knockout and conduit are built in for a 1/2" black iron line, run and leak-tested by a qualified installer. With a vented gas log, the damper must be removed or locked fully open.

What has to go on the floor in front of it?

Noncombustible floor protection extending at least 20" in front of the opening and 12" beyond each side — 66" x 20" for this fireplace — built from inorganic material meeting the manual's conductivity spec and finished in tile, slate, brick, stone or similar. A galvanized sheet-metal ember strip also runs under the fireplace's front edge. The firebox itself sits at 0" floor clearance; on carpet or tile it goes on a metal or wood panel of full width and depth.

Can it go in a mobile or manufactured home?

Yes — it may be installed in an aftermarket, permanently located manufactured home (USA only) or mobile home where local codes allow, but never in a sleeping room of a mobile home. The structural integrity of the floor, wall and ceiling must be maintained, so have the installer check the framing plan first.

Can I add a blower to it?

No — fan and blower kits are for the circulating models only, and the WRT2042 is the radiant, noncirculating face; the price book marks its blower rows "Not for use with WRT Radiant Units". If moving warm air matters to you, the louvered WCT2042 is the blower-ready version of this same firebox.

How does the warranty work if something goes wrong?

Superior warrants the fireplace — 20 years limited on the body, firebox and ceramic glass — and The Torch Guys handles it for you: we register the appliance and, if you ever need to claim, we deal with the manufacturer on your behalf rather than handing you a phone number. Keep your invoice and the model number; we hold the rest on file.

Warranty

In the unlikely event your product experiences a defect, our technical team will guide you through the manufacturer’s warranty process. Here is a general outline of what to expect.

Due to the technical nature of our products, the manufacturer must perform troubleshooting to process a warranty claim. Your installer will need to troubleshoot the problem on-site while working in tandem with our technical team. If troubleshooting leads to what The Torch Guys deems as a defective part, we will submit a warranty claim to the manufacturer on your behalf. Before we submit the claim, we will ask you to review the terms and confirm your consent to proceed.

Once the claim is submitted, the manufacturer will review it and either approve or deny it. If they have all the information and accept the claim, your warranty replacement part(s) will begin processing for shipment. If, for any reason, the claim is denied or we need more information, we will notify you as soon as possible.

All warranties are processed as exchanges. You can expect to receive a prepaid return label for the defective part(s), which must be returned within 30 days of receiving the warranty replacement(s).

Warranty claims can take anywhere from 1-4 weeks to process, depending on the season. Given the length of time claims can take, we recommend you fire up your unit in late summer/early fall to ensure your existing fireplace is in good working order for the winter season.
