About This Product

Superior WXS2021 21" Freestanding Wood-Burning Stove

A 2.0 cu. ft. firebrick-lined firebox with a maximum output of 76,000 BTU/hr on cord wood and maximum burn times of 7 to 9 hours. The Superior WXS2021 is an EPA-certified non-catalytic freestanding wood stove — 1.5 g/hr certified emissions, 72.9% HHV efficiency at low burn — with a cast door, and it heats with no electrical connection at all: a natural-draft fire on a 6" chimney with an air wash keeping the glass clear. Superior rates it for 1,200 to 2,000 square feet, as an approximation. from $2,339.

Choose the WXS2021 if you are heating the bigger space of the two Merit Series stoves — its firebox takes 19" logs and holds a fire 7 to 9 hours, so it carries overnight burns — and you want the cast door. Nothing plugs in unless you add the blower, so the heat keeps coming when the power is out.

It is not right if there is no route for a vertical 6" chimney — this is a natural-draft stove that needs roughly 12 feet minimum of effective draw and a termination above the roofline — or if you are counting on it as your only heat source: Superior designs it as a supplemental heater. With no chimney path, a direct-vent gas fireplace such as the Superior DRT3000 series vents straight out a wall instead. And if you only need to warm 700 to 1,400 square feet, the smaller WXS2016 does it for less.

Specifications

Set the stove on noncombustible floor protection at least 3/8" thick that runs beneath it and extends 16" in front of and 8" to either side of the door opening. Wall clearances are charted for two connector types — single wall for residential installs and double wall for residential or mobile home — for parallel and corner installations; the double-wall set is the tighter of the two. The chimney is 6": minimum 24 MSG black steel connector into a UL 103 HT Class A factory-built chimney or a code-approved masonry flue, with about 12 feet minimum of effective draw, terminating 3 feet above the roof penetration and 2 feet above any roof within 10 feet. Tested to UL 1482-2022 / ULC S627-2023 and HUD standards, PFS TECO report 14-193.

How the WXS2021 compares to the WXS2016

Same Merit Series pedestal stove design, one size apart. The WXS2021 runs a 2.0 cu. ft. firebox, 76,000 BTU/hr maximum on cord wood, 7-9 hour burns and a cast door at from $2,339; the WXS2016 is the 1.52 cu. ft., 55,600 BTU/hr steel door model at from $1,949. Match the stove to the space — this one is rated for 1,200 to 2,000 square feet.

Answers to common questions

What chimney does it need, and is any of it included?

None of the chimney ships with the stove — it is all configured to your roof. The WXS2021 connects with minimum 6" diameter, 24 MSG black steel connector pipe (single wall or double wall) to a UL 103 HT Class A factory-built chimney or a code-approved masonry flue with liner, with connector and chimney from the same brand — Security Chimneys, Jakes Evans/GSW, Dura-Vent, Metal Fab, Ameri-Tec, Metalbestos, ICC and IHP Snap-Pak are the approved brands. Plan roughly 12 feet minimum of effective draw, and terminate 3 feet above the roof penetration and 2 feet above any roof within 10 feet. Send us your ceiling height and roof pitch and we will size the run with you.

What has to go on the floor under it?

Noncombustible floor protection at least 3/8" thick, extending beneath the whole stove and — in the USA — 16" in front of the door opening and 8" to either side of it. If any connector pipe runs horizontally over the floor, the protection also has to cover under the pipe plus 2" to either side. The stove must not sit closer to combustible walls than the clearance table allows for your pipe type.

Can it go in a mobile or manufactured home?

Yes — the WXS2021 is approved for manufactured (mobile) home installation. Mobile homes add four requirements: the outside air kit, double-wall connector pipe with a spark arrestor at the chimney termination, the stove secured to the floor and grounded to the chassis, and never in a sleeping room. The structural integrity of the floor, wall and ceiling/roof must be maintained.

Does it need electricity?

No — the stove is a natural-draft wood burner with no electrical connection, so it keeps heating through a power outage. The one electric component is the optional Dial-A-Temp blower, which plugs into a grounded 120 V outlet (rated 1 amp) and moves the heat further into the room; if the blower is removed or never fitted, the rear heat shield block-off plate must be in place.

What can I burn in it?

Only dry, well-seasoned natural wood — cut, split and dried to under 20% moisture, with logs up to 19", burned directly on the firebrick with no grate or andirons. Garbage, salt-water driftwood, pressure-treated or manufactured wood products, coal and flammable liquids are all prohibited and void the certification and warranty.

How much space will it heat?

Superior rates the WXS2021 at 1,200 to 2,000 square feet, and states plainly that heating capacities and burn times are approximations only — actual performance varies with home design and insulation, ceiling heights, climate, the condition and type of your wood, burn rate and the chimney installation. It is designed as a supplemental heater, so keep an alternate heat source in the dwelling. In airtight, well-insulated homes, adequate makeup air matters — the stove is not designed to operate in negative pressure.

What’s included, what’s required, and what’s optional?
  • Included in the box: Cast door with ceramic glass; Pedestal base (attached during setup); Firebrick set, baffle boards, two baffle blankets and stainless secondary air tubes; EPA certified; UL 1482 / ULC S627 listed (PFS TECO); 20-year limited warranty.
  • Required to complete the installation, purchased separately: Venting - 6" chimney: 24 MSG black steel connector pipe plus a UL 103 HT Class A factory-built chimney (or a code-approved masonry flue) with termination; Floor Protection - noncombustible floor protection, 3/8" minimum thickness, under the stove and 16" in front / 8" to either side of the door opening (site-supplied); Outside Air - required for mobile-home installations, together with a double-wall connector and a spark-arrestor termination.
  • Optional: The Dial-A-Temp blower kit and the outside air kit — the stove heats without either (mobile homes excepted, where the outside air kit is required).
How does the warranty work if something goes wrong?

Superior warrants the stove — 20 years limited on the body, firebox, removable air tubes and ceramic glass — and The Torch Guys handles it for you: we register the appliance and, if you ever need to claim, we deal with the manufacturer on your behalf rather than handing you a phone number. Keep your invoice and the model number; we hold the rest on file.

Warranty

In the unlikely event your product experiences a defect, our technical team will guide you through the manufacturer’s warranty process. Here is a general outline of what to expect.

Due to the technical nature of our products, the manufacturer must perform troubleshooting to process a warranty claim. Your installer will need to troubleshoot the problem on-site while working in tandem with our technical team. If troubleshooting leads to what The Torch Guys deems as a defective part, we will submit a warranty claim to the manufacturer on your behalf. Before we submit the claim, we will ask you to review the terms and confirm your consent to proceed.

Once the claim is submitted, the manufacturer will review it and either approve or deny it. If they have all the information and accept the claim, your warranty replacement part(s) will begin processing for shipment. If, for any reason, the claim is denied or we need more information, we will notify you as soon as possible.

All warranties are processed as exchanges. You can expect to receive a prepaid return label for the defective part(s), which must be returned within 30 days of receiving the warranty replacement(s).

Warranty claims can take anywhere from 1-4 weeks to process, depending on the season. Given the length of time claims can take, we recommend you fire up your unit in late summer/early fall to ensure your existing fireplace is in good working order for the winter season.
