The Divine H42FSD 42" See-Through from Montigo
The wall stays where it is. The fire goes through it. The Divine H42FSD is a 42" see-through direct-vent gas fireplace: 37,000 BTU/hr, a 39 3/8" x 30 3/8" viewing area on each side, a 45" x 49 1/2" x 24" framed opening with a required 46 1/2" non-combustible header, from $6,239, covered by Montigo's residential fireplace warranty. Natural gas or propane; standing pilot (SIT NOVA 820) or SIT Proflame 2 electronic ignition by variant.
Choose it if the rooms are big enough that a smaller fire would read as an afterthought. This is the largest Divine see-through: nearly ten square feet of glass per side, one fireplace lighting two rooms. Your framing plan needs to carry the 24" depth and the non-combustible header.
It is not right if you plan to recess it into a wall (that is prohibited), if you cannot fit the 46 1/2" non-combustible header into your framing, if you want it straddling an indoor room and a patio (see-through units cannot - air flows through both sides), or if it would sit in an open, uncovered outdoor space.
Specifications
The framed opening is 45" wide x 49 1/2" high x 24" deep, with a 46 1/2" non-combustible header - a requirement unique to the 42" model. Clearance above the unit is 12" with a side vent or 19" with a top vent; sides need 2" and the floor 0". Combustible surrounds need 3" of side clearance. Gas supply: natural gas at 5.5" w.c. minimum inlet or propane at 11" w.c. Electronic-ignition models draw 120 VAC, 60 Hz, 6 A with a 3.15 A fuse and carry a 4x AA battery backup; standing-pilot models are millivolt and need no electricity.
How the H42FSD compares to other Divine configurations
The 38" see-through H38FSD gives up 3,000 BTU/hr (34,000) and about 4" of glass in each direction, but starts at $4,759 and skips the header requirement. If you want glass on three sides instead of two, the Divine pier, bay, and corner models run $6,709 - electronic ignition only. For a fully outdoor divider wall, the outdoor see-through SVO models start at $8,639 with no venting.
Answers to common questions
What mantel and surround clearances does it need?
Montigo warns that wall and mantel surfaces above the fireplace get hot. Combustible surrounds need at least 3" of side clearance, and any combustible mantel must stay within the mantel-projection zone. Run anything you plan to mount on the wall above past your installer first.
What venting does it use, and is the vent pipe included?
It is a direct-vent fireplace: 5" inner / 8" outer co-axial pipe, convertible to a top or rear vent run, terminating through the roof or an exterior wall. The termination must be the highest point of the vent run, and Montigo flex sections may not be cut. Vent pipe and termination are sold separately. Besides Montigo's own venting, approved alternates include DuraVent, ICC, MetalFab, Selkirk, and Flexmaster - The Torch Guys stocks DuraVent. If you need a power vent, that option requires Montigo pipe.
Will it work in a power outage?
The standing-pilot versions (H42FSDN, H42FSDL) are millivolt - the valve generates its own power, so they run with no electrical connection at all. The electronic-ignition versions (H42FSDNI, H42FSDLI) run on 120 V but include a 4x AA battery backup, so you can still light the fire when the power is out.
Can it go in a covered outdoor room?
Yes, with conditions. It is approved for a protected outdoor room: the overhang must cover at least 75% of the fireplace's height on the front and the sides, the supplied safety screen must stay installed, wiring must be outdoor-rated, and you cannot operate it below freezing (32°F). One more rule specific to see-through models: the fireplace cannot straddle an indoor room and an outdoor space, because air flows through both sides.
What is the non-combustible header requirement?
The 42" model (and only the 42") requires a 46 1/2" non-combustible header in the framing. Plan for it before drywall - it is a framing item, not an accessory you can add later.
