The RP424 from Montigo
The fire reads as a column of flame rather than a picture on a wall — 24" x 48" of glass on each of three sides, with no safety screen in front of any of it. The Montigo Exemplar RP424 (RP424PFN) is a three-sided pier gas fireplace, and the only one in the Exemplar series built with Montigo’s patented COOL-Pack glass technology. 45,000 BTU/h on natural gas, zero clearance to combustibles, a 68-1/2" W x 53" H x 24" D framing cavity (top vent). From $20,668 with your choice of burning media, and a 15-year firebox and burner warranty. Like every Exemplar it is power-vent designated — the Montigo power vent and control box are required for it to operate.
Choose the RP424 to end a wall, or to divide a room without closing it off. The first thing people notice is what is missing: there is no mesh screen in front of the fire. That is COOL-Pack, Montigo’s patented glass technology, and the RP424 is the only Exemplar that has it — a triple-layer tempered assembly in which the outer pane is itself the protective barrier, built to meet the 2015 safety standard that guards young children and other at-risk individuals against serious burns. You get the safety barrier without the screen across your view. Behind it sit a mirror firebox liner and twelve 20W halogen uplights, and the burner hides under the media bed, so the display you pick at checkout, twelve options, is the whole of what you see burning.
It is not right if you cannot supply 120V power and the Montigo power vent, or your vent path exceeds 25 ft including one elbow — that limit is firm. Your gas line must deliver 7" WC on natural gas, higher than the Exemplar norm. It is certified as a vented decorative appliance, not a heating appliance — it will warm the room it sits in, but do not buy it to replace a furnace or to zone-heat a space. It is not approved for mobile or manufactured homes, and it must never be operated without its burner media.
Specifications
The RP424 frames at 68-1/2" W x 53" H x 24" D in the top-vent configuration, with 0" clearance to combustibles on all sides per the rating label; if the floor is combustible and not wood, the unit sits on a metal or wood panel. Combustible mantels are permitted so long as they do not cover the glass or block panel removal. Venting is 5" inner / 8" outer Montigo pipe, maximum 25 ft total including one elbow, minimum 1 ft on rear vent. Ignition is Honeywell Hot Surface Ignition; gas supply is natural gas at 7" WC. Electrical service is a 115VAC 5 A fireplace circuit plus a 115VAC 3 A lighting circuit feeding twelve 20W G6.35 halogen uplights. The rating plate approves 0 to 4,500 ft, and the unit also carries CGA 2.17-M91 high-altitude certification.
RP424 vs. the rest of the Exemplar line
The RP424 is the only three-sided Exemplar. If one big face is the goal, the 72" RP620 ($19,909) trades the pier format for a 73-1/4" x 18-1/8" single-sided view with porcelain liner panels and integral lighting. If the fireplace sits inside a dividing wall rather than at the end of one, the see-through R420ST ($12,759) shows a 49-1/4" x 16-1/8" flame to two rooms for considerably less. Every option shares the power-vent requirement.
Answers to common questions
Why do I have to pick a “Burning Display” before checkout?
Because the RP424’s burner is a concealed, buried-media design: the media is not decoration, it is part of the appliance, and it must never be operated without it. Your chosen display ships as seven 3-lb bags of firestones, fireglass, or firebeads — or 350 + 150 speckled stones — so the fireplace arrives complete. Eleven of the twelve options are $20,668; speckled stones run $21,408.
What mantel clearance does the RP424 need?
The RP424 is a zero-clearance unit — the rating label lists 0" to combustibles on all sides — and combustible mantels are allowed as long as they do not cover the glass or block removal of the access panels. Anything you plan to mount on the wall above should go past your installer with the published clearances in hand.
What venting does it need, and is it included?
5" inner / 8" outer Montigo direct-vent pipe, sold separately, plus the required Montigo power vent termination. Mind the limit: the total vent run is capped at 25 ft including one elbow, with a 1-ft minimum on rear-vent configurations — plan the termination close to the fireplace. Use Montigo components only: the RP424 is power-vent designated, and Montigo requires its own pipe on any power-vented installation.
Will it run during a power outage?
No. The required power vent and the hot-surface ignition both run on 120V household power. If the power is out, the fireplace is out.
Where can the RP424 be installed?
Indoors, per the rating plate. It is approved from 0 to 4,500 ft and additionally carries CGA 2.17-M91 high-altitude certification — for sites above 4,500 ft, contact our team. It is not approved for mobile or manufactured homes. If the floor is combustible and not wood, the unit must sit on a metal or wood panel.
Is propane available?

Does buying online void the Montigo warranty?
It can. Montigo’s published warranty excludes equipment “sold direct to the consumer via internet or auction websites” unless the seller is an authorized dealer, and it requires professional installation and annual service.
